Every year Texas is hit with many storms, some of which are quite severe. The roofs that cover the homes and buildings in this area withstand the brunt of these powerful forces of Mother Nature. Sometimes they come out unscathed; however, they may also suffer some type of destruction.
After stormy weather, it is important to look for any new damage to the top of your building that may need attention. Arranging for roof repair now rather than later may save you from needing an entire roof replacement sooner than expected.
Signs of Hail Damage
Severe storms often come with hail. While smaller frozen rain is not typically a problem for roofs that are in good shape, any that are an inch or more in diameter can cause widespread destruction to even a newer installation. The best thing to do after a bad storm is to look for signs of damage so you can call a roof repair company if necessary.
Signs of hail damage to all types of shingles and tiles include dents, cracks, dimples, broken or torn shingles, and even missing shingles. Asphalt shingles may be missing the protective granule layer which is evidenced by a collection of loose granules in the gutters. Metal roofing can also be severely dinged and dented from hail.
In all of these situations, the possibility that moisture will get under the exterior surface and begin to leak increases substantially. In addition, many materials damaged by hail will become prematurely brittle and no longer protect the structure the way it should, making roof replacement necessary.
Signs of Wind Damage
Any severe storm can cause significant destruction to some roofs if the wind is substantial. After a high wind incident, be sure to inspect your structure looking for obvious problems like missing shingles, panels that have been blown off, loosened or peeled membranes, and missing or damaged flashing along with any less obvious issues.
Loose shingles or panels that have been slightly lifted off the surface can allow moisture to seep beneath, saturating the underlayment. This may cause the decking and framing to rot over time. Strong winds can even loosen decking from the rafters, putting the entire structure at risk. Loose materials must be re-adhered and any broken or missing components repaired or replaced by a roof repair company before further deterioration can occur.
Signs of Leaks
The best time to look for leaks is right after a storm, when the driving rain and wind make them more apparent. Like impairments due to hail and wind damage, any leaks and water damage not corrected after a storm can reduce the service life of the structure and make the need for roof replacement a greater possibility.
Leaks are often apparent from inside the house. Look in the attic, around fireplaces, and along the ceilings on the top story of the home or building. Search for water stains on the walls, ceilings, or framework as well as wet insulation and condensation under the inside of the decking.
If your roof has been properly maintained, it will stand up through most bad weather conditions. When storms blow through, roofs can suffer unexpected damage even if they seem okay at first glance. Protect your home or building by looking for the signs discussed above after a severe storm and arrange for roof repair if you see any damage. Avoid the need for an early roof replacement by making sure minor repairs are made as soon as they are discovered!
